What is the Difference Between On-Device and Cloud Dictation on Mac?

On-Device Dictation

On-device dictation processes audio directly on your Mac.

Key benefits:

  • Works without an internet connection (in supported configurations)

  • Faster response time with no network delay

  • Better privacy since audio stays on your device

Considerations:

  • Performance and accuracy may vary depending on your Mac’s hardware and language model

Cloud Dictation

Cloud dictation processes audio using Speechify’s servers.

Key benefits:

  • Strong performance for long-form and context-heavy speech

  • Can improve formatting, punctuation, and structure

  • Works independently of device hardware

Requirements:

  • Requires an active internet connection

  • Performance may depend on network speed

Which Should You Use?

  • Use On-Device Dictation for speed, responsiveness, and offline use

  • Use Cloud Dictation for stronger formatting, long-form writing, and enhanced processing

How to Switch Dictation Modes

  1. Open the Speechify Mac app

  2. Go to Dictation

  3. Select Dictation Engine

  4. Choose either On-Device or Cloud
